Choosing support during pregnancy, birth, and postpartum is deeply personal. Below are answers to some of the questions families ask most often.

Working Together
Every family deserves support that feels personal, respectful, and aligned with their needs. Learn more about our team, our philosophy, and what it's like to have Nurturing Together beside you during this season of life.
How do I know if a doula is right for me?
Many families seek doula support because they want an experienced, steady presence throughout pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. Some are looking for education and preparation, while others want emotional support, practical guidance, or additional reassurance during a major life transition.
A consultation is a great opportunity to explore whether our approach feels like the right fit for your family.
What if I don't know what kind of support I need yet?
That's completely okay, and very common!
Many families reach out knowing they would like more support but aren't sure whether they need birth support, postpartum care, overnight help, feeding guidance, or a combination of services. During a consultation, we'll talk through your goals, concerns, and circumstances and help you identify the type of support that may be most helpful for your family.
What areas do you serve?
We support families throughout Boston, Greater Boston, MetroWest, and southern New Hampshire. Depending on the type of service requested, we may also be able to accommodate families in nearby areas.
When should I reach out?
The earlier the better, especially for birth and overnight postpartum support, as availability can become limited. However, families reach out at every stage of pregnancy and postpartum, and we're always happy to discuss your needs.
What makes working with a doula team different from working with a single doula?
One of the benefits of working with Nurturing Together is access to a collaborative team of experienced professionals.
Our team approach allows us to provide continuity of care, shared expertise, reliable backup coverage, and support across multiple stages of your journey. We regularly collaborate behind the scenes to ensure families receive thoughtful, consistent care while benefiting from the strengths and experience of our entire team.
While you'll build relationships with the doulas directly involved in your care, you'll also have the reassurance of a broader support network behind you.
Will I know which doula will be supporting me?
Yes. Building trust and connection is an important part of our work. We intentionally create opportunities for families to get to know the doulas involved in their care and understand how support will be structured. Our goal is for you to feel comfortable, informed, and confident in the relationships you build with our team.
How do you handle backup coverage?
Birth is unpredictable, which is why backup planning is an important part of professional doula care.
As a team, we maintain clear communication and established backup systems to ensure support is available should illness, emergency, or unforeseen circumstances arise. Families have the added benefit of knowing that backup support comes from trusted members of the Nurturing Together team who share our philosophy and approach to care.
Do you offer virtual support?
Yes. Depending on your needs and location, virtual support may be available for pregnancy preparation, postpartum guidance, feeding support, education, and consultations.
While some services are most effective in person, virtual support can be a valuable option for families seeking guidance, reassurance, and connection from the comfort of home.
Do you support all types of families?
Yes. We welcome and support families of all backgrounds, identities, beliefs, and family structures. Our care is rooted in respect, inclusivity, and meeting families where they are.
Pregnancy & Birth
Questions about preparing for labor, birth, and working with a birth doula.
What does a birth doula do?
A birth doula provides continuous emotional, physical, and informational support throughout labor and birth. We help families feel informed, supported, and grounded while working alongside their medical providers and support team.
Do doulas replace doctors, midwives, or nurses?
No. Doulas do not provide medical care, diagnose conditions, or make medical decisions. Instead, we complement your care team by offering continuous support, education, comfort measures, and advocacy support throughout the birth experience.
Can my partner still be involved if I hire a doula?
Absolutely. One of our roles is supporting partners as well. We help partners feel informed, confident, and included while allowing them to focus on supporting and connecting with you.
Do you support medicated births, inductions, and cesarean births?
Yes. We support families planning unmedicated births, epidurals, inductions, scheduled cesareans, and everything in between. Our goal is not a specific type of birth, but helping families feel supported and informed throughout their experience.
What if I am already late in pregnancy?
One of the benefits of working with Nurturing Together is access to a collaborative team of experienced professionals.
Our team approach allows us to provide continuity of care, shared expertise, reliable backup coverage, and support across multiple stages of your journey. We regularly collaborate behind the scenes to ensure families receive thoughtful, consistent care while benefiting from the strengths and experience of our entire team.
While you'll build relationships with the doulas directly involved in your care, you'll also have the reassurance of a broader support network behind you.
What if my birth doesn't go according to plan?
What is the Body Ready Method?
The Body Ready Method is an evidence-based approach that helps assess and support balance, mobility, and alignment during pregnancy. It can be incorporated into birth preparation to help families feel physically prepared for labor and birth.
Postpartum & Newborn Support
Support doesn't end after birth. These questions address the early weeks and months of life with a new baby.
What does a postpartum doula do?
Postpartum doulas provide emotional support, newborn guidance, feeding support, and practical help during the transition into parenthood. Our goal is to help families feel more rested, confident, and supported during the early weeks and months after birth.
What does overnight support look like?
Overnight support is tailored to each family's needs. It may include newborn care, feeding support, soothing and settling baby, diapering, and helping parents get more uninterrupted rest.
How long do families typically receive postpartum support?
Every family is different. Some seek support for a few visits during the first weeks, while others choose ongoing care for several months. We work together to create a plan that meets your family's needs.
Do you provide support for twins or multiples?
Yes. We support families welcoming twins and multiples and understand the unique challenges and adjustments that can accompany those experiences.
Can you help us learn newborn care?
Yes. We regularly support families with newborn feeding, diapering, soothing, sleep expectations, bathing, babywearing, and understanding normal newborn behavior.
Feeding Support
Support doesn't end after birth. These questions address the early weeks and months of life with a new baby.
Do I need to be breastfeeding to work with you?
Not at all. We support families who are breastfeeding, pumping, combination feeding, formula feeding, or exploring what works best for their family.
What kind of lactation support do you offer?
We provide practical, evidence-based feeding support and education. Depending on your needs, we may also recommend additional resources or referrals when specialized lactation care is beneficial.
Photography
What photography sources do you offer?
We offer maternity, birth, newborn, and family photography with a documentary approach that focuses on connection, emotion, and authentic moments rather than heavily posed images.
What is birth photography like?
Birth photography is discreet and respectful. Our goal is to document your experience while allowing you to remain fully present in the moment.
Do I have to be a doula client to book photography?
No. Photography services are available independently, though many families choose to combine photography with doula support.
Bereavement Support
What bereavement support do you offer?
We provide compassionate support for families experiencing stillbirth, pregnancy loss, infant loss, or difficult birth experiences. Support may include emotional care, guidance through decisions, memory-making support, and practical resources.
Is bereavement support really free?
Yes. We believe no family should face the loss of a baby without support. Bereavement doula services are offered completely free of charge.
Still have questions?
